Dr Michael Newman

DIRECTOR OF EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE

Mike has over 30 years of policing experience and is dedicated to improving community safety outcomes through evidence-based practices. He currently serves as the Director, Evidence-Based Practice, Global Consortium Group.

Mike’s journey in Evidence-Based Policing (EBP) began in 2013 with a University of Queensland Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) for the Mobile Police Community Office—a project named a 2015 Finalist in the QPS Awards for Excellence. He has since held various leadership positions, including managing the Investigations and Intelligence Training Unit and the QPS Leadership Centre. He has also been an EBP Visiting Fellow at the University of Queensland (UQ), Operations Manager for the Cybercrime Squad, and Intelligence Operations Manager for Crime Intelligence Services, State Intelligence Group.

In 2023, Mike was awarded a prestigious Churchill Fellowship to research best practices in cybercrime investigation and intelligence gathering. This research took him across Asia, North America, and Europe to engage with leading experts and identify innovative approaches to combating cybercrime.

In 2025, Mike completed his PhD at the University of Queensland, focusing on gendered advancement within a policing environment. He holds a Graduate Certificate from the Australian Institute of Company Directors, a Master of Information Systems (awarded with Distinction), and a Bachelor of Information Technology (also awarded with Distinction) both from the University of Southern Queensland.

Mike’s commitment to the field is further evidenced by his role as Secretary for the Australia and New Zealand Society for Evidence-Based Policing (ANZSEBP). In 2016, he was certified as a 'Champion of Evidence-Based Policing' by the University of Cambridge. His contributions have garnered significant international recognition, including induction into the George Mason University EBP Hall of Fame (2018), the Outstanding Practitioner Award from the American Society of Criminology (2021), and being named an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Experimental Criminology in 2024. Most recently, he was recognised as an Evidence-Based Policing Trailblazer.
