Shane Patton

Shane was Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police for 5 years through to 2025. He led an organisation of 23,000 employees providing policing services to over seven million Victorians and had responsibility for 331 police stations across the State, delivering functions required to keep Victoria safe. He has experience, and has led in all fields of policing including; investigations, road policing, counter-terrorism, community policing, prosecutions, training, emergency management and public order management.

With over 40 years experience Shane led the policing responses to the COVID-19 pandemic and significant bushfires and floods; influenced reforms in sector-wide emergency management response and oversaw the lowest ever number of lives lost on Victorian roads. He drove major reform including creation of a Counter Terrorism Command, a unit to monitor radicalised persons of interest, a drone unit, a Gang Crime Squad and Illicit Firearms Teams. Shane has also driven significant legislative reform including in counter-terrorism, firearms and DNA suspect sampling.

He was the State Police Commander for significant counter terrorism operations in Victoria as well as other critical incidents, including the attempted hi-jacking of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH128 in 2017.

He led and introduced Neighbourhood Policing and Schools Engagement models across the State, increasing police focus on issues that matter most to community. That included his commitment to reducing the representation of First Nations people in the criminal justice system through programs he implemented following his historic appearance before the Yoorrook Justice Commission. Shane’s historic apology to the Indigenous Stolen Generations survivors and their families in 2024 also acknowledged the causes of injustices and created an opportunity to heal. He has, and continues to, champion diversity and inclusion in all areas.

He is a confident and respectful communicator and public speaker, highly regarded for his operational and strategic expertise, including in governance, risk management and public safety innovation.

Shane held Board positions at State and National level and is also a member of the IACP. He holds tertiary qualifications including a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Administration and is currently undertaking a law degree. He is a Williamson Fellow; an ANZSOG, LinCT, and FBI NEI leadership program alumnus and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Police Management.

He has received several policing and emergency management medals, including the Australian Police Medal and his interests include travel, history, reading and sport. He is married and a proud father of two adult children.
