A serving Queensland Police Service Senior Sergeant and Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Queensland, with a PhD on the spatial and temporal patterning of random breath testing as a crime control strategy. Named Distinguished Police Scientist by the Australia & New Zealand Society of Evidence Based Policing in 2024 and an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Experimental Criminology in 2025.
A data-driven law enforcement professional with over a decade specialising in the application of evidence-based and problem-oriented policing, Darren has served with the Queensland Police Service since 2008 as a Senior Sergeant and Acting Inspector — managing annual budgets exceeding $1,000,000, supervising work units of over 500 staff, and applying hot-spot policing and crime theory to achieve statistically significant harm reduction and operational efficiencies. His IM-PACT trial was named Outstanding Police Experiment by the Australia & New Zealand Society of Evidence Based Policing (2019) and won two Australian Road Safety Foundation awards (2022), and his risk-based audit strategy for weapons licensing was adopted as an organisational best-practice guide.
Darren completed his PhD in the School of Social Sciences at The University of Queensland — a spatio-temporal analysis of random breath testing as a crime control strategy — and joined the university as an Adjunct Lecturer in 2026, contributing as an industry research partner to the Applied Criminology and Criminal Justice courses. He is a peer reviewer for four journals, an associate supervisor to a PhD student at UniSQ, and regularly presents evidence-based research at international conferences, with publications spanning random breath testing deployment, digital demand reduction, procedurally just correspondence and firearms risk management.
