A career across specialist roles in UK policing, from the Royal Hong Kong Police to Metropolitan Police Superintendent leading aviation policing at Heathrow and London City airports. Commended as Strategic Firearms Commander (Gold) for US Presidential visits and one of the Marauding Terrorist Attacks in London, and commander of major venues including Wembley Stadium, Lord's and the London 2012 Olympic events in Hyde Park. Now a College of Policing Associate Trainer and Risk and Security Manager for an International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament overseas.
As Police Superintendent for Aviation Policing at Heathrow and London City airports, Ian led 450 officers and staff in the operational response to counter-terrorism, insider threat and crime investigation, collaborating with UK Border Force, the CAA and TSA, the MPS Counter Terrorist Command, airlines and the airport operators. He chaired the UK Airports Police Commanders Group (2021 – 2024) representing all 45 UK police forces, delivered national workstreams spanning insider threat, disruptive passengers, organised crime and CT, represented UK aviation policing at the European Aviation Policing Commanders Group and its US equivalent, and was Police Commander for the response to Extinction Rebellion's attempts to close London City Airport in 2019 — over two hundred arrests made and the airport kept open.
As a Strategic Firearms Commander he led multiple high-threat and counter-terrorism armed incidents and national firearms operations, and as UK policing lead for Body Worn Video in armed policing drove the initial trials and wrote the national police policy adopted by all 45 UK forces, deploying to Jamaica to help the local police force reduce allegations of extrajudicial killings. His earlier career spans the Royal Hong Kong Police, Thames Valley Police and the Metropolitan Police. He is Security Cleared (SC) and Management Vetted (MV), and speaks conversational Cantonese and German.

- Public order command Public Order Public Safety accredited Silver and Bronze Commander: Match Commander for Wembley, Chelsea, Fulham and QPR, with command roles in the 2011 serious disorder and the central London New Year's Eve operation.

- 2003 – 2006 Tactical Firearms Commander — Aviation Policing, Heathrow Airport, Metropolitan Police Service Led a team of armed officers responsible for protective security, counter-terrorism response and rapid reaction to airport security issues; project managed the transition of London City Airport policing into Specialist Operations.
- Earlier career Royal Hong Kong Police, Thames Valley Police and Metropolitan Police Police Inspector with the Royal Hong Kong Police (1990 – 1993), leading an armed team of fifty local officers and learning Cantonese, then Police Constable to Police Sergeant (1994 – 2003) across response team, custody, public order, armed response vehicle and staff officer roles.
