Technology must be designed for the person in front of it — not the organisation deploying it, not the efficiency metric that justified the budget, not the average user that makes it easier to build.
That single idea sits under everything I write and everything I advise on. More than thirty-nine years across over twenty sectors — policing, government, health, finance, transport and more — have shown me the same pattern again and again. When a system fails someone, the fault is almost never theirs. They are not using it wrong. The system was built around someone else's convenience, and the person paying for that convenience is rarely the one who signed it off.
Technology is a tool, not an end in itself. It earns its place when it does something a person genuinely could not do before, when it adds real capability rather than swapping one constraint for another, and when it responds to the specific person using it rather than an average built for ease of delivery. Judged against that standard, most of what gets called innovation serves the organisation that commissioned it, not the individual it was supposedly built for, and not the society it claims to benefit.
That is the standard behind my advisory work, my writing, and everything on this page — technology held to account for the human cost it creates, not just the efficiency it promises.
